Fettercairn Whisky Box

Module: Design Products (DJ32012)
Project Brief
Design a packaging concept for one expression of the Fettercairn whisky brand. The concept should in some way embody the place or process in which it was made. It should explore an aspect of the local landscape, people & community, or unique whisky making process. These two themes build on two key aspects of Fettercairn’s vision for the future.

This 3rd year undergraduate project involved working with Fettercairn Whisky to design packaging representing various aspects of their brand and unique identity. This high-end whisky box is made almost entirely from sustainable oak using various techniques to explore key areas of Fettercairn’s identity such as their scenic location in foothills of the Cairngorms and their unique flavour-led whisky making process.

The River North Esk carves through the lands surrounding Fettercairn Distillery, the front of the box represents the fluidity and depth that the water expresses as it crashes through the land. This is also represented on the inside of the charred section. A lighter burn and blue finish creates this fluidity and depth through the natural grain of the wood, as well as representing the brands colour pallet.

Fettercairn’s unique experimentation through charring the interior of the barrels is another major inspiration for this design. The sliding section on the right has been deeply charred to represent this process as well as indicate its function. By engraving the logo and other information throughout the box the theme of burning is enhanced and balanced.
